For over 80 years, the American Academy of Optometry has represented the pinnacle of optometric practice, research, and continuing education. Members of the Academy practice at the highest level of competency in their profession. In qualifying for and maintaining fellowship, the optometrist is evaluated against the highest standards of professional competence. The letters "FAAO" (Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry) after an optometrist's name signifies to colleagues and patients that rigorous qualifications for fellowship have been met. Fellowship is only open to professionals who demonstrate that they meet Academy standards by practicing at the highest level permitted by law. Out of over 35,000 practicing optometrists in the United States, fewer than 2,000 in private practice have earned the title "FAAO".
